NABIP Opposes Medicare Agent Commission Cuts
UnitedHealthcare Cuts Medicare Agent Commissions, Prompting National Outcry from Healthcare Advocates
In a move sparking concern across the healthcare industry, UnitedHealthcare has announced Medicare agent commission cuts. These cuts impact over 100 Medicare Advantage plans in more than 20 states. The National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals (NABIP) strongly opposes this decision.
NABIP says the change threatens seniors’ access to licensed, trusted insurance guidance. It also undermines the critical role of independent agents in the Medicare enrollment process.
Agents Help Seniors Navigate Medicare
Licensed insurance agents provide vital support. They help Medicare beneficiaries understand plan options, enroll in coverage, and manage claims. They also assist with changes when health needs evolve.
Removing or reducing renewal commissions discourages this kind of long-term service. It also puts seniors at risk of choosing the wrong coverage without proper help.
“This isn’t about modernization,” said NABIP CEO Jessica Brooks-Woods. “It’s about putting profits over people. Licensed agents serve their communities. They guide seniors through healthcare decisions that affect their lives.”
NABIP Calls for CMS Intervention
NABIP has met with Congress and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). They are urging officials to stop these cuts and protect Medicare beneficiaries. NABIP also joined NAIFA, HAFA, CIAB, and IIABA in submitting a letter to Congress. The letter includes over 14,000 stories from affected seniors.
The organization also urges CMS to set a firm October 1 deadline for any plan compensation changes. This would prevent last-minute surprises during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP).
Protecting Seniors and the Agents Who Support Them
NABIP believes every American deserves affordable, understandable, and personalized healthcare. That mission includes keeping licensed Medicare agents involved in the process.
